Spotlight: Charlene Luo
Charlene Luo is a 2025 recipient of the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s Advancement in Animal Law Scholarship.
What Animal Legal Defense Fund student chapter activities are you proudest of and why?
One of the events I’m proudest of was our lunch talk with Jiefei Yuan from New York, held on April 8. She shared a moving clip from the documentary Before She Sleeps and led a powerful Q&A session afterward. The event drew 23 attendees — our highest turnout to date — and included not just American students, but also students from Asian and Arabic backgrounds, reflecting the growing diversity and reach of our chapter. The discussion opened students’ eyes to the realities of dog meat consumption and the legal and cultural challenges surrounding animal rescue in countries like Korea and China. It was the first time our chapter spotlighted international animal law issues, and it sparked meaningful conversation and awareness that I hope will inspire more globally-minded advocacy on campus.
Any other noteworthy experience?
We also hosted a preview talk on animal law and its intersection with domestic violence, led by Professor Katz. This event was designed to introduce students to animal law as an academic and practical field. It helped build early interest in our upcoming fall Animal Law course and encouraged students to think critically about how animal issues intersect with human justice systems.
What is an animal law-related goal of yours for the upcoming academic year?
My main goal is to continue growing our chapter and expanding awareness. I truly believe that for non-human animals to be heard, we must first make others care. Awareness leads to change, and I feel incredibly grateful to be in law school and have the tools to contribute to that change.
What are your plans/goals for post-graduation?
After graduation, I hope to remain an active resource and mentor for our chapter. I’ve benefited so much from others guidance, and I want to give back by supporting future student leaders and helping the chapter stay strong and connected.
What is one piece of advice that you’d like to pass on to other Animal Legal Defense Fund student chapter leaders?
Don’t be afraid to start small — sometimes the most meaningful impact begins with one conversation, one new member, or one event. Be consistent, stay curious, and never underestimate the power of planting seeds that might grow in ways you don’t expect.
