Eric Sugarman

As a Litigation Fellow, Eric works to uplift the voices of animals through meaningful legal challenges to corporate and state power. Eric’s legal practice is deeply informed by his vision of a livable future beyond carnism and industrial animal agribusiness wherein the health and wellbeing of people, planet, and animals are prioritized over profits. Before joining the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Eric worked as a staff attorney with the Oregon Law Center, where he provided free representation to low-income Oregonians, with a focus on survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

Eric graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Sustainability and Geography. He received his law degree with certificates in animal and environmental law from Lewis & Clark Law School, where he served as a co-director of the ALDF Student Chapter.

Eric is currently based on the Oregon Coast. Outside of his pursuit of interspecies justice, he finds joy and presence in live music, surfing, rock climbing, trail running, reading, cooking, and crafting.
