Action Alert

Support the Humane Transport of Farmed Animals Act

This action is for U.S. residents only.

The Twenty-Eight Hour Law is the only federal law that exists in the U.S. to protect farmed animals during transit, but it is woefully underenforced. The law requires vehicles transporting certain animals for slaughter to stop at least every 28 hours to allow the animals exercise, food, and water. However, the trucking industry rarely adheres to it due to a lack of education and enforcement from the federal government. Inhumane handling, overcrowding, dehydration, heat stroke, and hypothermia are all too common during farmed animal transport, and the conditions animals are forced to endure often lead to severe injuries and death.

Forcing sick or injured animals to be transported, especially on long journeys, is not only senselessly cruel, but also creates a breeding ground for zoonotic pathogens — risking disease spread in our food system and beyond.

A federal bill called the Humane Transport of Farmed Animals Act (H.R. 5286) would require stricter enforcement of the Twenty-Eight Hour Law and ban the transport of sick or injured animals. Please take action today to urge your federal representative to cosponsor this important bill.
