Resources to Support Those Affected by Recent Fires
The Animal Legal Defense Fund is heartbroken watching the impact of the recent fires unfolding on news and social media, and hearing reports from our staff, supporters, friends, and family in the Los Angeles area. Although we recognize that healing from the fires’ devastation will take a long time, we are inspired by the way the community is unifying, and would like to take the opportunity to guide our supporters toward ways to bolster those local efforts.
No matter where you are located, these recent fires remind all of us that disaster preparedness is of critical importance. Everyone should take this as an opportunity to make sure your loved ones — including humans and animals — are ready for situations where you may need to shelter in place or evacuate. There are a variety of resources available online, focused on how to make sure your animal companions are part of your plan:
- FEMA, Pets and Animals
- American Red Cross, Pet Disaster Preparedness
- RedRover, Pet Disaster Preparedness (also includes resources for birds, horses, and reptiles)
- American Veterinary Medical Association, Pets and Disasters
And, if you are looking for a way to support groups helping those impacted by the recent fires in LA, such as by becoming a temporary foster for displaced animals, consider supporting any of the following animal groups:
- Stacy Hope Rescue, Finding foster homes for displaced animals
- Lange Foundation, Offering pet supplies or boarding to displaced animals
- Fleet of Angels, Working within the region
- Community Outreach Promoting Emergency (“COPE”) Preparedness
Other resources for fire victims:
- Sevilla Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Pedraza Reales; Offering treatment, medication and food free of charge for fire victims
- VCA Animal Hospitals, Offering free boarding for evacuated animals
- Airbnb.org, Offering free, emergency housing to people impacted by the LA wildfires
- Evacuation Shelters:
- El Camino Real Charter High School, 5440 Valley Circle Blvd., Woodland Hills
- Pasadena Convention Center, 300 E Green St., Pasadena
- Westwood Recreation Center, 1350 S Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles
- Ritchie Valens Recreation Center, 10736 Laurel Canyon Blvd., Pacoima
- Sepulveda Recreation Center, 8825 Kester Ave., Panorama City
- Animal Shelters:
- Pomona Fairplex, 1101 W Mckinley Ave., Pomona (Horses)
- Pierce College Equestrian Center (Large Animals), 7100 El Rancho Dr., Woodland Hills
- Rose Bowl Stadium (Large Animals), 1001 Rose Bowl Dr., Pasadena
- Agoura Animal Care Center (Small Animals), 29525 Agoura Rd., Agoura Hills
