About the Internship

Position Title: Simon Chaitowitz Communications Internship

About the Communications Team: The Physicians Committee’s communications team works to maximize publicity for our campaigns, programs, and research studies through traditional and social media. The team oversees all media relations, social media, videos, advertising, digital marketing, and website management for the organization.

About the Internship: This internship honors the late Ms. Simon Chaitowitz, a writer, public relations professional, and longtime leader of the Physicians Committee’s communications team. The internship is a great opportunity to gain valuable communications, video editing, and social media skills while working for an organization dedicated to saving and improving human and animal lives.

The Simon Chaitowitz Communications Intern will provide support for the communications team’s video and social media work. Internship learning opportunities may include:

  • Developing concepts for videos, shooting footage, and editing TikTok videos, Instagram Reels, and Youtube shorts
  • Filming our program experts at our Washington, DC office
  • Attending events in the Washington, D.C. area to capture footage for social media videos as needed.
  • Helping with our social media strategy

All interns will receive an orientation at the start of their internship and ongoing support from their staff mentor. The Physicians Committee will assist the intern in obtaining course credit if applicable.

Work Location: Hybrid in Washington, D.C. This position requires filming on an estimated weekly basis at our headquarters in Washington, D.C. (Friendship Heights on Metro's Red Line). The remaining work will be performed remotely from a location within the Washington D.C., metropolitan area.

Time Frame and Work Schedule: This is a part-time (10-20 hours per week) summer semester internship. The exact schedule and the start and end dates can be flexible to accommodate the intern’s availability. The Physicians Committee’s core business hours are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, ET.

Compensation: This is a nonexempt paid internship. The internship compensation is $17.50 per hour.

Reports To:

  • Internship Mentor: Video Producer
  • Department Director: Vice President of Communications

Qualifications

All candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Education:

  • Required: Applicants must be recent graduates (within one year) or students currently studying communications, marketing, digital media, or related field
  • Preferred: Nutrition or public health education is a plus

Work Experience:

  • Required:
    • Familiarity with social media platforms, especially TikTok, including trends, sounds, formats, and best practices.
    • Experience creating social media content, either professionally, academically, or through personal or brand accounts.
  • Preferred: Nutrition or public health experience is a plus

Additional Qualities:

  • Required:
    • Understanding of the Physicians Committee’s mission and enthusiasm for communicating evidence-based health content in creative and engaging ways
    • Basic photography and/or videography experience (especially for short-form vertical video).
    • Basic video editing experience (e.g., CapCut, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, descript, or mobile-native editing tools)
    • Familiarity with basic analytics and insights tracking, particularly on TikTok (e.g., knowing how to interpret engagement rates, follower growth, reach, etc.)
  • Preferred:
    • Prior experience managing or contributing to social media for a brand, organization, or creator
