In 2017 the Animal Legal Defense Fund revived the issues of a 2013 lawsuit and brought a new case along with Humane ARME against the California Exposition and State Fair (Cal Expo) and Regents of the University of California (University of California). The lawsuit alleged that Cal Expo and the University of California illegally failed to provide pigs with an adequate exercise area by confining them for weeks at the State Fair in small farrowing crates that do not allow the pigs to walk or turn around. The Animal Legal Defense Fund and Humane ARME brought the lawsuit under California Corporations Code section 10404 which gives standing to corporations for the prevention of cruelty to animals to enjoin the violation of laws relating to animals.

The lawsuit settled quickly and the nursing and pregnant pigs exhibit was not held in 2017. In a March 2018 letter sent to Animal Legal Defense Fund attorneys pursuant to the settlement, the CEO of the state fair stated that the upcoming 2018 fair would once again not include the cruel display.
