Misty, the pony who was shot.

SANTA ROSA, Calif. — The national nonprofit Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) is offering a $5,000 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator(s) who allegedly shot and killed a pony this past weekend. According to media reports, the 16 year-old blond pony, Misty, was found bleeding in a pasture by a passing cyclist in rural Santa Rosa near Crane Creek Regional Park. The cyclist reported the injured pony to her owner, Robert Sapiane. Misty, a family pet for Sapiane’s two young daughters, died minutes later.

The attack likely took place in the middle of the night. The Press Democrat reports that an area check by local law enforcement revealed a neighbor who heard what sounded like a gunshot at midnight, implying that Misty may have suffered a very slow and painful death. Misty’s body was collected by Animal Control and sent to U.C. Davis for necropsy to officially establish her cause of death.

Under California Penal Code § 597(a) any person convicted of maliciously and intentionally maiming or killing an animal can be imprisoned for up to three years in county jail and/or fined $20,000 for felony animal cruelty. In California, it is at the DA’s discretion whether animal cruelty is charged as a felony. A misdemeanor charge would bring up to one year imprisonment and/or a $20,000 fine.

This would not be the first horse shot and killed maliciously in Sonoma County—two years ago, a horse named Delta Fox was shot and killed in the hills above Bennett Valley. ALDF also offered a reward in that case.

“Anyone who could shoot a kind and gentle horse for no reason is not only breaking the law but is a menace to society,” says ALDF Executive Director Stephen Wells. “Abusers who harm helpless animals often go on to victimize people as well, and we mean to see that this perpetrator is brought to justice.”

If you have information relating to the identity of the person or persons who shot and killed a horse near Crane Creek in Santa Rosa, CA, please contact the Animal Legal Defense Fund at 707-795-2533, x1010.

The Sheriff’s Office Property Crimes Unit is investigating the case.

Please catch this cruel sub-human….unfortunately, we are sharing this planet with sickos that need to be wiped off the face of this earth!!! Please drop them into Liberia’s hospital where they are treating Ebola & have them do all the cleaning of bodily fluids naked!!!

  4. Jeanne ODell says:

Hurting of animals is just getting worse because we have the laws and need more but the Justice system and law enforcement is not using those laws and giving people a slap on the wrist. We need to let our justice and law enforcement systems know they need to start holding up these laws.

  5. Cynthia says:

So thankful for ALDF and the work that they do.

  7. Marian Swenson says:

This cannot be tolerated. We need to send a message to animal abusers that they will pay for these crimes.

  8. NativeGal says:

I am a woman who is a Bay Area native and will contribute to the reward. This behavior simply cannot be tolerated. This is not “animal cruelty”; it is murder. No animal should suffer this way. A price should – and will – be paid.

  9. This person must b found and punished.

  10. TERESA BONELLI says:

Carcel y o tareas comunitarias a quienes no respetan la vida de un animal.

Up on island mountain in Humboldt county. The cattle farmers killed all the wild horses. Even leaving dead horses on other people’s land. Not even a baby left. Sad i miss seeing them.

    1. john doe says:

If ‘wild’ cows eat your garden would you get rid of them? the wild horses are eating the cattle gardens and the cattlemen do have the right to get rid of them, fencing or capturing them doesn’t work, shooting them does. Wildlife are ‘managed the same way with hunting seasons. Shooting other peoples livestock/pets is NOT to be condoned and is wrong.

      1. Ariel says:

WTH is a ‘cattle garden’? The cattle are eating the horses food. The horses were there first. It is a crime to kill wild horses on public property and on other people’s property. They should be reported and fined/jailed.

        1. Jacqueline Kolb says:

AMEN! Humans swear the earth belongs solely to them…

  12. Stephanie says:

I am SO sick that Pony had to suffer, and so sorry for those children. This is a terrible thing, and unnecessary heartbreak. Someone knows who did this, and may they rot in hell if they don’t come forward.

  13. Linda Comstock says:

This atrocious act should not go unpunished, please someone come forward. The local police or owners, need to install hidden cameras to catch the coward!

  14. Elle Jordan says:

Anyone who would do this to an animal is capable of anything. They need a lot of jail time to reflect on how diabolical their behavior is.Animal cruelty should never be tolerated by anyone.

  15. Ash says:

Now or later, they will pay. Something you can’t run or hide from. In this life, or your next.

  16. Kimberley says:

pray for the animals. pray for justice for the abusers. pray for mercy on the souls of the abusers

  17. Kattrinka says:

If you know anything about this cruel and COWARDLY murder, please speak up! The murderer(s) killed a beautiful, gentle, innocent family pet under cloak of darkness while trespassing onto private property. Misty (the horse) likely suffered in pain for long hours before mercifully dying from her wounds. What will this killer do next? It’s simply intolerable to allow this act to go unpunished! Speak up if you know anything that might help The Sheriff’s Office investigators and ALDF bring this miscreant to justice!

  21. appifish says:

Atrocious act by a sub-human, but I hope that everyone who is commenting about animal cruelty is vegan. It’s the only honest way.
