Dependent on candidate. Preference for candidate to be located in California, but potential for home office location in any state in ALDF Western Region (including Washington, Oregon, California, Idaho, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii).

Position Objectives: 

The Major Gifts Officer will support and enable the work of ALDF by playing a critical role in increasing major gifts support and is responsible for an annual revenue target.  The Major Gifts Officer will maintain a portfolio of approximately 125 donors capable of outright or planned gifts, with a primary focus on outright gifts. The position is responsible for developing strategies for the development of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship plans for major donors and prospects in ALDF’s western region with a particular focus on five figure gifts.



Major Gifts (80%):

  • Manage a portfolio of major and planned gift donors and prospective major gift level donors from within the region to deepen relationships with them, with a focus on donors capable of 5 figure gifts.
  • Conduct research on the giving potential of current donors to identify prospective new major donors in the region.
  • Under the direction of the Head of Major Gifts, develop strategies for cultivating, engaging, soliciting, and stewarding portfolio donors, and individualized moves management plans for top donors and prospects.
  • Craft effective proposals, reports, acknowledgements, and other related communications.
  • Support the Head of Major Gifts with coordinating any donor events within the region.
  • Maintain current and accurate records of all donor communications and research in donor database.
  • Provide regular and consistent reports to Head of Major Gifts or Director of Development as needed.
  • Assure donor confidentiality, as well as the confidentiality of ALDF clients.

Planned Gifts (15%)

  • Support the long-term financial strength of ALDF by responding to portfolio donors’ planned giving inquiries; stewarding portfolio donors who have chosen to make deferred and complex gifts, with a primary focus on bequests.
  • Responsible for creating planned giving cultivation plans for donors and prospects in the region, along with the Head of Major Gifts, and support marketing initiatives, to identify, cultivate and secure planned gifts by ALDF donors throughout the region.
  • Enhance donor gift planning and giving by remaining current about the variety of planned gift options, and providing initial guidance to donors with queries regarding more complex gift planning strategies.
  • Support the growth of our planned giving program by helping to develop written materials promoting planned gifts, newsletter articles, and other materials that support the planned giving program.
  • Assure donor confidentiality, as well as the confidentiality of ALDF clients.
  • Contribute to the overall success of the Development Department by performing all other duties as assigned.

Other (5%):

Performing tasks and other duties in keeping with the objectives of the department as assigned by the Head of Major Gifts 

Key Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of major gift experience, or equivalent work experience, with excellent references.
  • Results-oriented. Demonstrated success in soliciting and closing gifts at the 4-5 figure level.
  • Have a definite interest in and experience with animal protection issues, and be committed to the mission of ALDF.
  • A self-starter with a sense of urgency, a clear set of priorities, and a strong work ethic; must have the ability to adapt quickly to, plan for, and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced setting, with the ability to think strategically, problem solve, and manage multiple tasks concurrently, and to work both independently, and in teams.
  • High level ability to work independently and problem-solve.
  • Strong technological aptitude with advanced skills using Microsoft Office Suite and CRM database software; experience using ROI (Revolution Online) a plus.
  • Have a high degree of computer literacy including experience with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook in particular) and internet research skills.
  • Bachelor degree or equivalent experience.
  • Excellent writing skills for the purposes of proposals and cases for support.


Must be able to travel throughout the region to meet with donors, and utilize program events to maximize donor engagement opportunities. Must comply with ALDF’s travel policy, including maintaining fully vaccinated status for covid-19 and following CDC protocols during travel, including requirements to wear a mask on all planes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation when traveling into, within or out of the United States and in U.S. transportation hubs, such as airports and stations.

Be able to attend meetings, conferences, trainings, and other events in order to acquire and maintain proficiency in fulfilling the responsibilities of the position.
