Congratulations to the 2015 Rescue Tails photo contest winner! Of our three finalists, Penelope received the most votes! Penelope will be the star of our 2015 holiday photo card, which will be mailed to our supporters across the country. Read her story below.
I was working at my local Humane Society when I met Penelope. I never expected that I would adopt another dog, but sometimes things don’t always work out like you plan, and now, I can’t imagine my life without her. At the shelter, we normally put harder to adopt dogs behind the desk to get more attention. Someone suggested Penelope, but said that she was a bit difficult and they were scared to go get her. I laughed and jokingly said that I would go get her. Well, I don’t know if she sensed that I was giving her a chance, because we have been inseparable from the moment I took her out of that cage… that was almost five years ago now. Well, after I took her out, she did not want anyone else handling her. When I went to lunch, other staff members complained that she would bark and howl so loud and was only appeased when I came to get her. After getting to know her, I came to realize just how sweet and loyal she was—there wasn’t a bad bone in her! After weeks of no one being interested in her, I was made aware that Penelope was at risk of being euthanized. I was in shock and knew I couldn’t let this happen. Somehow I knew we were meant to be, but as a struggling college student who already helped stray cats, adopting another pet wasn’t on the forefront of my mind. However, I knew I couldn’t let Penelope down—so I decided to adopt her. We have been through so much together in the last few years, good and bad, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. She is one of my best friends and I can’t imagine life without her. She was my surprise and unplanned rescue pet—but don’t those make the best ones? She is one of the best decisions I ever made.

We adopted Phoebe from the Greyhound Adoption League of Texas (GALT). She was a 4 month old greyhound puppy being sold on Craigslist. When they picked her up, they found that she had a badly broken femur that was never repaired. GALT had the surgery done and we adopted her after her leg was healed. Phoebe has a big personality, absolutely loves people, loves to play tug-o-war and is quite energetic. She just celebrated her 3rd birthday. She fits into our family perfectly and life would be very boring without her in it.
This is Charger, he is a rescue! I rescued him 8 years ago. He was left on the door step, in the cold, of the shelter with his two siblings. He has such a fun personality!! He has a stuffed bunny he loves to drag around the house (the bunny toy is larger then he is, lol) He loves the camera, and of course cuddles!
