For the second time in this legal showdown, ALDF will speak up on behalf of the city in fur-related lawsuits brought by the high-priced West Hollywood fashion boutique Mayfair House, Inc.

In 2011, West Hollywood passed the first citywide ban on the sale of animal fur products; that ordinance went into effect in September, 2013. Mayfair House—which sells luxury items made from animal fur—lost a federal lawsuit against the city in 2014. A federal judge allowed ALDF to submit a similar legal brief, and subsequently agreed with ALDF’s argument, ruling that lawsuit was meritless; Mayfair House filed a second lawsuit, this time in state court. ALDF’s amicus brief supports the city’s motion to dismiss this lawsuit as meritless as well.

Where: Santa Monica Courthouse, Department M. 1725 Main St., Santa Monica, Calif. 90401.

When: Friday, April 3, 9 a.m.

Celebrity battles between Sharon Osbourne and Kim Kardashian have fur flying everywhere. But this hot topic has its roots in local history. For decades, West Hollywood has supported groundbreaking animal protections laws and has been a “Cruelty Free Zone for Animals.” The brief asks the court to uphold the city’s constitutional authority to protect animals within its limits. ALDF has just launched its first ever regional attorney network in the Los Angeles area.

“West Hollywood should be commended for humane laws that ban horrific acts of cruelty, and we expect the court will dismiss this frivolous case with prejudice,” said Stephen Wells, executive director of ALDF. “Animals on fur farms suffer unimaginable agony before being suffocated, electrocuted, gassed, skinned alive, and/or poisoned. Cruelty is not fashionable.”

Copies of ALDF’s amicus brief are available by request.

  13. Mayumi from Japan says:

(English isn’t my first language, hope you understand what I’m trying to say, thank you for your patience) I really respect ALDF and West Hollywood. I’m from Japan but totally against catching/killing whales and dolphins and also all the animal testing, fur and skin for fashion (or anything), because it’s WRONG. All the pains and tortures I was talking about but you know? some people said “it’s traditional things, it’s their culture. You can’t complain,,blah blah blah…” What the h or f!! (I hate swearing but they really makes me mad)! If their tradition and culture give someone pain and death… it’s the tradition/culture to stop and they should start happy tradition and culture! I see too many awful news about people enjoy abusing animals…showing off animal skins and fur…killing animals for money… There ARE too many people do anything for money, using animals because they can’t talk back. How coward. And too many people DON’T CARE. When I stand up and say things about helping the animals from abusing. They pretend like they didn’t read/hear anything. (Im talking about FACEBOOK thing). And all the media they don’t show the truth. I guess none of the media in Japan, will show us about this West Hollywood thing. There are many NPOs and volunteer groups who are fighting for saving animals in Japan. I’d like to say thank you to ALDF on behalf of them.

  16. Marie-Therese Valentin says:

At the time of the caves, it was necessary to wear fur. At the time of our grandmothers, it was stylish to wear a fur coat. Today, women who wear fur look themselves like old skins. No elegance in this industry, nothing but barbarism of another age.

  17. Teresa Gennett says:

This is downright evil. Those who have no regard whatsoever for the welfare of the poor animals who have suffered all in the name of prancing around in a fur coat or anything from an animal are shallow, ignorant excuses for human beings. Shame on them. This is disgusting, Karma will pay them a visit.
