cat-reward-article-image-1200-630Portland, Oregon – The national non-profit Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for stabbing two cats on or about June 25, 2015 in North East Portland. The two wounded cats, Grand Theft Auto and Alibi, were found near the intersections of NE 6th Ave & Holman St. (in the Woodlawn neighborhood) by their owner Sarah Shapiro, who was returning home from a trip.

Under Oregon law, aggravated animal abuse is class C felony that carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $125,000 fine.

ALDF’s Criminal Justice Program Director, Scott Heiser, said, “We need the community to speak up here.  As is common in child and elder abuse cases, these victim cats cannot speak for themselves let alone identify those who harmed them.” Heiser added, “Whoever did this poses a very real threat to the community as the research is unambiguous—those who intentionally harm animals are five times more likely to harm humans.”

If you have any information related to this incident, please contact Randall Brown, Chief Field Supervisor, Multnomah County Animal Services at randall.brown@multco.us or 503-988-9079.

ALDF was founded in 1979 with the unique mission of protecting the lives and advancing the interests of animals through the legal system. For more information, please visit aldf.org.

  1. Thank you for standing up for these innocent victims. I wish other states had a stiffer penalties in place as Portland Oregon does. come on California get with it!

  2. Barbara Rose says:

Please get justice. Jail and more. Prayers for owner. Did cats survive?? Hope so.

  3. Jacqueline huckle says:

They are part of the human nature so should be treated on same level as a human … abuse and murder of other humans is the same as animals ????

    1. Mary Campbell says:

Jacqueline, I don’t think that equating humans & animals or putting human violence above animal violence is relevant. Both are acts of violence and both victims are sentient beings. The perpetrator is dangerous to both animals and humans. But it is important to have compassion for animals since we are their only voice.

  4. linda says:

I hope they go to prison for a long time. Its the only way this kind of thing will stop letting them know you will pay the price.for animal suffering

  5. Christine says:

OMG! What did these kitties ever do wrong? What was the purpose of stabbing them? The fullest penalty isnt enough, not by far. There is a special place in hell for child and animal abusers.

  6. I hope they nail this prick and burn him

  7. Cathy Jedynski says:

I am so sorry to hear about the 2 darling kitties, I will never understand how anyone can hurt any type of animal. My husband and I have always had pets for many, many years, we also have 3 kitties and a greyhound . God help them if anybody would hurt our best “Friends”.

  8. Tamerra LeMay says:

The HORRIFIC nature of this crime tells me the individual(s) responsible for the suffering and agony they caused to these 2 sweet, innocent pets!!! They ususally go on to be CERIAL KILLERS! There is enough evidence already, what more will it take??? Please stand up for them as they have no voice of there own! I am praying for these beauties pls share and do the same!!!

  9. Cristina says:

Is NE PORTLAND a bad neighborhood??
Not from there but I’ve heard there are different areas of town w/more violent crime.

  10. Victoria Gill says:

The next step here on down the road a bit in a few years-is stabbing a human being. Or-kidnapping and torture. It won’t be long. This is just the beginning-animals. Be on the look out for this sick
person. It may be a kid on his or her way to higher and ‘better’ targets. Very serious business folks as if you did not already know this.

  11. Randall Brown says:

The person/people who did this is still out there. I urge anyone with information to contact me.

  12. Jo-Ann says:

I hope they put the scumbag/scumbags in prison with some animal lovers and they torture them and kill them !!!! Yes I said KILL them and I meant it!! I hope the cats are OK and get better soon. I also hope they will be kept inside where they will be safe.

  13. Niki says:

This is exactly why fools need to start being RESPONSIBLE if they want to own pets! Keep your animals INSIDE—all of them. Also, SPAY & NEUTER to stop adding to the already exponential cat, & shelter & homeless animal population! Ugh!!
