Steve Cooley

Steve Cooley has served as the District Attorney of Los Angeles County since 2000. He is only the third person to be elected to a third consecutive term as D.A. in the 158 year history of the office. Mr. Cooley presides over the largest prosecutorial agency in the country with more than 1,000 Deputy District Attorneys working under his supervision and direction. During his tenure as District Attorney, Mr. Cooley has created many new specialized divisions, such as a unit responsible for prosecuting corrupt public officials and a unit dedicated to holding those involved in the justice system accountable if they break the law. Mr. Cooley is also very proud to have created the Animal Cruelty Prosecution program.

Recognizing that animals are among the most vulnerable members of our society and that those who mistreat animals often commit crimes against human victims, Mr. Cooley created the largest division in the country dedicated to the consistent and vigorous prosecution of animal cruelty, animal neglect, and illegal animal fighting cases. The program selects and trains Deputy District Attorneys throughout the county to prosecute animal-related crimes from filing to final disposition. The program’s efforts include training law enforcement and animal control agencies to investigate cases of animal abuse and illegal animal fighting.  Increasing public awareness that mistreatment of animals is a crime that should be – and is – taken seriously is also a priority.  Since the creation of the unit, many defendants convicted of animal-related crimes have received sentences that often involve lengthy jail and prison terms. In his constant quest to ensure the safety of all citizens of Los Angeles County, Mr. Cooley is committed to providing his prosecutors with the tools and the resources to effectively prosecute crimes against animals.
