National Justice for Animals Week 2016

The Animal Legal Defense Fund’s National Justice for Animals Week is an annual event dedicated to raising public awareness about animal abuse, how to report it, and how to work within your community to create stronger laws and ensure tough enforcement. Join ALDF for a week of action for animals, February 21-27, 2016!

Baxter, a four-year-old silky haired dachshund, is the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s National Justice for Animals Week 2016 mascot. The Oregon Humane Society (OHS) rescued Baxter from an Oregon puppy mill two years ago, after which he became known only as Count 26 in the resulting animal cruelty case.

When he went to his foster home, he was so matted and dirty that it wasn’t clear what kind of dog he was. But Baxter, like all animals, is resilient and he’s come a long way since. He’s learned that people can be kind, loving, and fun. He revels in the comforts of home. He’s a great example of how far a neglected animal can come with proper care and a little love!

Take Action

Here are seven actions you can take—one for each day of the week.

  1. Join the SALDF chapter at your school. For more information, visit
  2. Sign the Animal Bill of Rights.
  3. Download the tenth edition of Animal Protection Laws of the USA & Canada. Familiarize yourself with your state or provincial laws.
  4. Learn about ALDF’s campaign to shut down puppy mills and talk with your friends and family about why they should adopt, not shop.
  5. Don’t just read the news–make it! Write a letter to the editor about an issue involving animals in your area.
  6. Download ALDF’s LiveSafe App. The app lets you help animals in your community by reporting abuse and neglect right from your phone.
  7. Follow ALDF on Facebook and Twitter.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund would like to honor law enforcement, prosecutors, and legislators who make and enforce tough laws protecting animals.
