Bauck Sentenced for Dog Torturing Conviction
On March 24, 2009 a jury found Kathy Bauck guilty on 4 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. In addition to the options of jail time and fines, under Minnesota law the judge has the ability to order Bauck’s animals forfeited, and to prohibit her from owning or having custody or control over companion animals for a period of time.

(Otter Tail County, MN) Notorious for years, Kathy Bauck is again facing animal cruelty charges for alleged animal abuses at her Pick of the Litter Kennel where well over a thousand dogs reportedly remain. Ms. Bauck has a long history with animal abuse allegations – most recently a 2008 plea bargain allowed her to continue to operate her breeding operation. An undercover investigation by the Companion Animal Protection Society has since led to the current criminal case which charged 7 counts of animal cruelty and 2 counts of practicing veterinary medicine without a license. In a disappointing development however, 5 of those counts were dismissed by Judge Waldemar Senyk in January 2009.
ALDF has offered its free legal resources to the Otter Tail County Attorney and would happily provide its expertise – as well as grant money toward expert witness costs if needed – to ensure a thorough and meaningful prosecution.

Using this case as an example, Minnesotans are encouraged to write letters to the editors of their local papers, expressing their concern over puppy mills and noting their expectation that law enforcement authorities be educated on this issue and coordinate effectively for meaningful interventions.
