U.S. Supreme Court Will Hear U.S. v. Stevens Tomorrow

Posted by Matthew Liebman, ALDF Staff Attorney on October 5, 2009

The U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments tomorrow in U.S. v. Stevens, a case involving the sale of dogfighting videos. The sale and possession of such videos has been illegal in the U.S. for a decade, but this case may result in the Supreme Court ruling that video depictions of animal cruelty are protected under the First Amendment.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund doesn’t believe the law banning these videos violates the Constitution, and we’ve submitted an amicus curiae brief urging the Court to uphold the law and recognize that the prevention of cruelty to animals is a compelling government interest.
