Should Michael Vick be Allowed to Own a Pet Dog?

Posted by Scott Heiser, Director of ALDF's Criminal Justice Program on December 22, 2010

NFL quarterback Michael Vick recently stated publicly
that he wants to own a dog and believes it would be good for his
rehabilitation process. As you might recall, Vick served 18 months in prison after a felony conviction in 2007 for
his widely publicized involvement in dogfighting–including shooting,
electrocuting, and hanging dogs who did not perform well in the
ring.

Mr. Vick’s federal sentence contains a three-year ban on the possession of a dog. Should
it have been permanent? We at the Animal Legal Defense Fund certainly think so, but we have to
recognize the jurisdictional limits inherent in our justice system.

In this Q&A session, I
answer some questions and provides some clarification relating to the
current debate about whether Michael Vick should be allowed to own a pet
dog.

NO. If someone had the gut to hurt an inecent little animal on purpose then why should we let it be able to happen again. the animal did nothing it is mean and just plane sad to watch an animal die because of what you yourself did to it. if the court makes it ok for him to own a dog then fine but be ready to take him back to jail and haul a dead body of an animal out of that place. sorrry but no i just think its wrong.

Why should he be allowed to own a dog again? What’s going to stop him from abusing it, can anyone honestly say he won’t relapse and countinue dog figthing. Why should a poor innocent puppy have to have him as an owner? It isn’t right, he screwed up and shouldn’t be given another chance, it may seem mean or unfair but its the right thing to do. Its like asking should sex offenders be allowed to be near kids again.

I really do not get this question? Why would anyone allow him to do so. Doesn’t make any sence to me. No he shouldn’t. wHAT HE DID WAS WRONG. and should be punished and not allowed to have any animals.
