Running for the Animals

Posted by William Rivas-Rivas, ALDF Development Director on October 11, 2011

On July 31, I ran the San Francisco Marathon, referred to by The Wall Street Journal as “The Race Even Marathoners Fear.”

I wasn’t alone–25,000 runners from around the country and globe took on the intense challenge of running 26.2 miles of San Francisco’s picturesque neighborhoods–steep hills included. Even running across the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, albeit breathtaking, is no walk in the park.

Why would I take on the physical toll running 26.2 miles–dehydration, blisters, black toenails, chafing, calf strains, muscle cramps, and soreness just to name a few.

My motivation for running?

I ran the San Francisco Marathon to raise awareness and support for the Animal Legal Defense Fund. I didn’t run the marathon for me. I ran it for all the animals who suffer and die in factory farms, puppy mills, research laboratories, and other abusive industries.

When I finally crossed the marathon finish line, some 5 hours after I started and 3 hours after the marathon winner, I was beyond thrilled.

I met my goal of finishing and crossing the finish line without injury.

I also surpassed my fundraising goal. I raised nearly $2,000 for ALDF!

I owe many thanks to everyone who donated and to all of those who supported me during the run. Knowing that so many people believed in me and believed in ALDF made it all possible for me to finish and meet my goal.

I am so proud to have finished this marathon and so proud to help support an organization that is committed to fighting to protect the lives and advance the interests of animals through the legal system.

I’m so, so proud of you. We all need to raise awareness of the inhumanity these animals face every day. I never miss an opportunity to sing the praises of ALDF, who do such a wonderful, awesome job of changing the laws to protect animals. Thank you for all you did, and put those “dogs” up!!
