Californians: Speak Out for Kangaroos–Ask Schwarzenegger to Veto SB 1345Posted by Lisa Franzetta, ALDF's Director of Communications on September 13, 2010
For over thirty-five years, California law helped protect kangaroos by preventing the importation of their skins. However, by passing SB 1345, the California legislature is allowing the import into the Golden State of kangaroo products for five more years, so that companies such as Adidas can legally sell soccer shoes made from kangaroos.
As ALDF’s Joyce Tischler recently reported during a speaking tour in Australia, the mass slaughter of wild kangaroos is incredibly cruel and violent, subjecting hundreds of thousands of kangaroos–including the baby joeys whom hunters are legally require to club to death after their mothers are shot–to extremely painful deaths. Professional soccer superstars David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have both switched to synthetic soccer shoes after learning of the cruelty that went into making the kangaroo versions.
California law banned the importation of kangaroos’ skins for over thirty-five years, but Adidas continued to violate the law, shipping kangaroo skins from kangaroos slaughtered in Australia. Viva! International Voice for Animals sued the company, and two California courts sided with Adidas, agreeing that federal law prohibited the California ban. ALDF submitted an amicus brief in support of Viva! in the California Supreme Court in 2006, arguing that states had the right to ban products and conduct they felt was cruel to animals. The court ruled in favor of Viva!
However, a California bill, SB 880, created in 2007 and set to expire on January 1, 2011, allowed kangaroo skins to be imported. Adidas, the largest buyer of kangaroo skins in the world, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars lobbying the Legislature on this measure. Now, SB 1345 would allow kangaroo skins to be imported for five more years in California.
Let Governor Schwarzenegger know that Californians do not support Australia’s violent kangaroo slaughter–ask him to veto SB 1345 today! To really make your voice heard, you can write the Governor a short note (be sure to include your name and address) at:
