Ben’s Cruising…and Flying…Again for ALDF

Posted by Michelle Ullrich-Kownacki, Ben's Mom on July 15, 2011

After four successful dog-friendly cruises in Annapolis, Maryland to benefit the Animal Legal Defense Fund, Little Ben is on tap to host a fifth. This little Jack Russell, Ben, who was represented and rescued by ALDF in the Woodley hoarder/puppy mill case, has become quite an inspiration as the store dog at Paws pet boutique in Annapolis. Once yellow and terrified, now fluffy white and politely reserved (although certainly not afraid to speak up), Ben is a beautiful example of why it is so important animals have a voice through ALDF. So here we go again: on Friday, August 19 the Harbor Queen will be departing the Annapolis City Dock to entertain guests with live music, finger foods by Whole Foods, Paws pet boutique dog cake, cash bar and an awesome silent auction all to raise money and awareness for ALDF. What better way to spend an evening with your best friend than on a three-hour evening Cruise for Compassion?

Ben enjoys his cakeIf you are in the Maryland area, tickets are only $49 per person and dogs are free when accompanied by a well-behaved human. Annapolis is quite dog-friendly, so lodging is available for both you and your best friend if you’re traveling. We were fortunate to have ALDF Executive Director Stephen Wells and Director of Communications Lisa Franzetta join us on Ben’s last cruise, which raised $10,000, plus a $10,000 match from Annapolis business The Squires Group.

For those of you who are not the cruising type or near the Annapolis area, perhaps you’d like to support ALDF while winning a chance at your own getaway! Ben has just the answer, with his Lifesaver Raffle that gives the winner two round trip tickets on Southwest Airlines (no blackout dates). The winner will be drawn on Ben’s Cruise for Compassion, but need not be present to win. Raffle tickets are only $10 each, or 3 for $25.

Ben enjoys life every day now with his three dog brothers and sister cat. As I’m typing this, Ben is curled in his bed by my side sleeping with sweet dreams thanks to ALDF. What a difference a dog makes. Tickets to Ben’s Cruise or Raffle can be purchased by calling Paws pet boutique at 410-263-8683, where Ben and I both work. All proceeds are donated to ALDF.

Here’s to more happy tails ahead!
