Wonderful idea! Joined and looking forward to participating!
Excited to have joined this new network. I have many animal law, animal rights, and animal welfare books on my shelf--and I keep promising myself I'll read them. I hope having the space for discussion and to read what others have to say about these types of books that I'm really interested in will help me get them off the shelf! (I recently read "A Small Furry Prayer: Dog Rescue and the Meaning of Life" by Steven Kotler and I thought it was great!)
Looking forward to this!
Joined. Yay, Rin Tin Tin as the first up!
This is a great idea! I love it! I can't wait to get started. :)
I am looking forward to this book club. I am currently on my fourth book by Stanley Coren. Excited to see what's new.
Animals have brought great joy to my life. I'm grateful for discovering the ALDF website.
Brilliant idea! Looking forward to reading and discussing with you all :)
I am very much looking forward to the book club and Rin Tin Tin!
This is a terrific idea! I have volunteered in animal rescue for 7 years and have tons of animal related books on my shelf. Now I am a cancer patient and have not been able to volunteer for several months. During treatment, my 3 cats and 1 dog (all rescues) have kept me smiling, given me unconditional love, and my pup was glued to my side every day for weeks as I slept away the chemo fatigue. Animals are a priceless gift to humans!! We owe them everything we can do for them. :)
Really great idea! Looking forward to seeing some great animal books!
Rin Tin Tin was the first dog I remember as a child, and the reason why German Shepherds are one of my favorite breed of dog. Can't wait to read more about him!
I grew up watching Rin Tin Tin, and Lassie. two of the smartest dogs ever.!! They helped form my love of animals.!! This is great.!!!!!!
The subject of animal companionship has always played a huge role in my life since i was a child, but not until a devastating event in my life that happened a few years ago did I truly understand their importance. January 3, 2010 was an ordinary winter night but especially cold. I was getting comfy to watch tv with my 5 precious recues. I had a few moments to spare so I went down and set my oven to self clean and then put my son to bed. I was going to lie down to snuggle with my precious ones, but decided to get a drink first. On my way downstairs, I smelled a burning smell and ran to find my kitchen engulfed in flames. I screamed for my son to get out and he ran down and out the door as I yelled for him to call 911 at our neighors house. Flames were shooting everywhere and I couldnt get to the extinguisher. Not knowing how it started, I didnt know how to treat it and began trying totry to extinguish the flames with towels. I would desperately try to make some progress and then run out to gasp for air and then back in. All the while I had the front door open and was screaming for my babies. Usually an open door was an invitation to run outdoors.I was calling them, screaming their names in a panic as things began melting around me. Neighbors dragged me out as my screams for my precious ones grew louder. The fire was out of control and as the firemen arrived all I told them was to get my babies.Images of all the times they were at my side when I needed them. All of the love and companionship and joy they brought me.I took them home to save them, not let harm come to them. I watched in horror as the firemen brought pillowcases with their lifeless bodies from the house. I wailed in horror. If only i had chosen to run up and grab them instead of trying to beat out the flames, if only i ran up and threw them out a window onto the lawn...if only,if only.I think I must have terrified them since i never raised my voice with them and probably thought i was angry. Now,not a day goes by that I dont cry for the loss of my companions and have learned to realize all that they meant to me. I lost everything that night, but would lose it all over again to have them back. It is when they are gone you remember the little things like even though they would be sleeping, if I would go down to do the laundry i would turn around and they would be there, never leaving my side. Late at night they were my company, my friends, my children, my everything. We laughed and played. They listened to my stories of life seeiming to be interested in my every word. Our animals bring us so much more than we realize. It is not until they are gone have I realized their gifts to us. I have since rescued 4 more, but my heart is still raw with pain. The guilt and horror lives in me as i see their precious faces. PLEASE SAY A PRAYER FOR MY BABIES AND GIVE YOUR COMPANION ANIMAL EXTRA LOVE TODAY. FIGHT FOR LEGISLATION AND BE THEIR VOICES. THANK YOU.
Animal companions enhance and save lives. We owe them so much.
Fun idea! Look forward to learning about many good animal books.
Wonderful idea! Looking forward to reading great animal books. Our pets are our companions who listen to us without judgement and love us unconditionally. And, as one of my cat shelter volunteer t-shirt reads - Pets are Family Too!
I have grown up with a love of animals that has increased by leaps and bounds over the years. There is nothing I would not do to care for and protect my rescues that I've owned over the years. Lassie and Rin Tin Tin had a strong influence in my younger years. Lately, I have been getting more involved with the human treatment of all animals, after reading books authored by Temple Grandin. I would live to read the Rin Tin Tin book.
As part of the family my puppies have been sensitive and intuitive. When my Husband suffered a heart attack in the backyard, our Great Dane Sandy stood guard over him, just as she would stand between strangers and my toddlers. Later on the two Pomeranian sibling helped bring my husband back to health with their snuggles, kisses and cuddles. Another dog woke us one night when druggies tried to raid our cars. The stories are endless, and so is their love.
I grew up watching all the animal shows I could. Rin Tin Tin was my favorite! There was something about the relationship that the animals and the humans had in these shows that was so appealing to me as a child and now as an adult I truly understand why.
I vaguely remember a time when I was very young without dogs...never since. Such a part of my life they enrich it so much, yet I can help save them too.I keep thinking about my next dog but they never let me choose - just show up at our farm. animal book club is a great idea, i hope it will let us know about all the fun and interesting books out there.
I cannot remember a time in my life when I did not have a dog. My parents bought my first dog while my mom was pregnant with me, so that they could raise their first child with a dog. My baby book is stacked with photos of me and my late dog, Casey. Since then I have been in love with dogs and have dedicated a significant portion of my life to fighting for dogs and other animals. My mother loves dogs just as much as I do, and I was lucky enough that her and my father never objected to me bringing a dog home. My mother currently keeps my Jack Russel in her home while I am away at school and she has recently rescued a terrier mix. As soon as I moved away to school, I immediately got myself a puppy, an Olde English Bulldog named Beauregarde, "Beau". Beau has since become a like a child to me, he moved with me from Arizona to Miami where I am now enrolled in Law School. At school, I am the current President of our chapter of SALDF. I dedicate my life inside and outside of school fighting for the humane treatment of nonhuman animals, both companion animals and others. While I fight for the rights of all animals, dogs have always held a special place in my heart. A place that could never be filled by anything. After graduating, I hope to work in animal law. Eventually, I plan to open my own animal rescue on my husband's farm in Virginia.
Companion animals have always had a soft spot in my heart, for over 30 years we have had various dogs, birds, a mouse, turtle, cat, and fish. Just watching them do their thing brings a smile to my face. They cheer you up when you are down, lick the tears away when you let yoruself have a good cry, and always make you laugh when they are being goofy, which my Staffy named Stoli does quite well. Without all of the furry brothers and sisters I have had in my life, it would have been very lonely.

Thank you for putting together this group and for highlighting books on such important animal topics!
I'm very happy to join the ALDF reading club. I look forward to reading books about the current issues involving animals. I'm very anxious to read "Death at Seaworld," since this topic is one that everyone needs to address. Whether you are pro-captivity or anti-captivity, we all need to consider the marine mammals performing tricks for food. Is this what was intended for them?
We should all help animals all over the world! They are helpless against us, and besides, they have not done anything to us. They are fellow living creatures, living souls, just like us. We should all co-exist en live peacefully.
Animal rights are merely a demonstration of humanity. Why is this a problem?
Excited to join up and help authors who are committed to helping raise awareness for those who can't speak.
