Hebron, INDIANA — This Sunday, the national nonprofits Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF) and In Defense of Animals (IDA) are protesting the brutal killing of an Indiana family's companion animal. Students, attorneys, and other activists are distributing leaflets that urge people to come forward with information about the culprit(s) responsible for trapping and killing a dog named "Pearl" in her own yard last December. Students from Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) groups will be distributing flyers at local organizations.
On December 8, 2012, the perpetrator(s) set a trap that killed Pearl in Hebron, Indiana, a town 60 miles southeast of Chicago. Pearl's owner found her struggling in their yard with her head caught in the trap. After trying unsuccessfully to pry the trap from Pearl's head, the distraught owner watched as Pearl died.
ALDF, IDA, and other animal protection groups are offering a reward totaling $8,500 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator (s) responsible for Pearl's death. The perpetrator of this crime could face felony animal cruelty charges. Indiana penal code § 35-46-3-12(c) makes it a felony to knowingly or intentionally torture or mutilate a vertebrate animal. In Indiana, such a felony carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $10,000 fine, according to § 35-50-2-7(a).
"We urge anyone with information about this sadistic crime to come forward immediately," says ALDF Executive Director Stephen Wells. "Anyone capable of such cruelty to animals and disregard of the law will likely inflict similar cruelty against humans."
