Backyard Butchers

A dark world of animal abuse is proliferating in Florida. Known as “backyard slaughter,” animals are illegally slaughtered and butchered on makeshift farms. The banned meat is then sold on the black market. Animals suffer immense cruelty, starvation, botched “live” slaughters, and are kept in disgusting and diseased yards. That is why ALDF filed a lawsuit in Florida’s 13th District Court in Tampa against Cuesta Farm (aka “Quality Cattle”) and Planchart Farm (aka “B.P. Screens”), whose gruesome violations of animal cruelty and nuisance laws are brought to light in shocking undercover video investigation captured by the Animal Recovery Mission (ARM), Richard “Kudo” Couto’s nonprofit investigative organization.
Landmark Lawsuit
As Florida law allows its citizens to bring forth “public nuisance” lawsuits, ALDF is representing residents of Hillsborough County in the lawsuit who are alarmed by criminal violations of public health codes and animal slaughter and disposal laws, illegal sale of horse, cow, and pig meat, and horrifying cruelty to animals found in these yards. ALDF’s landmark case marks the first time Florida residents have sued to stop the unspeakable acts of cruelty committed by backyard butchers and the threat to public health, safety, and quality of life they pose.
Backyard Butchers
ALDF’s lawsuit targets “backyard butchers” on farms where horses, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, and birds are slaughtered, butchered, and sold for public consumption without any governmental oversight. On both farms, animals are routinely dragged, bludgeoned, stabbed, and butchered while still alive. Florida’s humane slaughter laws and cruelty codes prohibit such malicious acts of animal abuse. Although hobbyists and illegal entrepreneurs alike seek to profit from illegally confining, breeding, and slaughtering animals, as ALDF’s investigation shows, the horror animals endure at makeshift farms is unconscionable.
Children are often present at both the slaughter and the butchering of animals. As shown in the video, the defendants gut a pig and drag him with a meat hook while still alive and struggling. Another segment shows a defendant and an unidentified young girl torturing a goat by butchering him alive. They stab him, make holes in each of his hind legs with a knife to hang him from meat hooks, slice the nerves in his neck, and beat him with a meat cleaver. Death takes three to four minutes.
The Black Market Exposed
In a Florida subdivision called Citrus Park, many residents participate in backyard slaughter. Richard Couto, the undercover investigator from ARM, describes the confinement of animals on these types of farms as “basically torture chambers.” As documented by ARM’s investigation, illegally slaughtered horsemeat is sold on the black market. Slaughter pigs are fed discarded horse carcasses to hide the evidence of criminal activity and animal abuse. ALDF is stepping in to ensure these acts of cruelty come to an end, the offenders are punished, the health of citizens protected, and the tortured, abused, and butchered animals receive justice.
Public Nuisance and Health Threat
Backyard slaughter is also a major public health and nuisance issue. In violation of Florida’s health and safety codes, unsellable “byproducts” are discarded on site, sometimes on protected wetlands, and blood is disposed of by polluting local ground water. Sick and starved animals are slaughtered and sold to the general public in the black market. Dead and rotting carcasses of slaughtered animals are tossed into open pits where live animals are kept with toxic waste, in criminal violation of Florida law. Located in populated suburban areas, these backyard slaughterhouses put neighbors at serious risk of disease and stress. Robert Palin, a Citrus Park resident and plaintiff represented in ALDF’s lawsuit, is a disabled veteran with post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) for whom the constant sounds of gunshots coming from neighboring slaughter yards are extremely traumatic.
Unbridled Criminals
These “backyard butchers” are truly a danger to society. Two of the defendants have criminal records that demonstrate total disregard for the law. On farms like this, animals are tortured, whipped, confined in small spaces amongst reeking piles of garbage, shot and gutted while alive, starved, and then sold to the public in the black market. This is the price animals pay when backyard slaughter is allowed to proliferate.
ALDF’s lawsuit seeks to stop the ongoing, thoroughly documented animal abuse committed by defendants and to put an end to the public health threats these criminal butchers pose. In turn, we hope to set a legal precedent that would help concerned citizens shut down backyard slaughter nationwide.

Be careful to not call these places farms. Farm is a word for a place that grows vegetables, various farm animals and most farmers live on their farm. Let's keep the vocabulary strict and very clear. In a few years the terms will become interchangeable.
No animal should ever have to endure such suffering. I don't understand how anyone can inflict such horrific abuse to the innocents. I realize people will choose to eat meat, but to see animals suffer in such ways is unbelievable!
It isn't just Florida. We have ongoing problems with eastern Europeans setting up slaughter shops in rural northern California. Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills in Auburn has dealt with several cases. One case involved an ersatz private nursing home where they kept and slaughtered animals to feed to the residents.

It is absolutely disgusting that some human beings are this lacking in compassion and humanity to treat other animals like this. These people need to be stopped and they need to be punished.

What is wrong with some people that they could care less about the living, breathing animals who are suffering in front of them at their hand? Some people will always eat meat, but do we have to treat these animals in this way. Animals do feel pain, just like we as humans do. Where is the compassion? WAKE UP PEOPLE!
Just shot off an appeal to the Colorado reps. Hopefully, we don't have a similar issue there, and other states can help bring up the awareness and put pressure on states where it is happening.
We need many more Humane Officers to enforce these laws and investigate all places where animals are. Then they need high fines and felony offenses. If fines were larger and enforcement available it would stop. Abuse and cruelty are not legal and please get solutions NOW!

This is horrendous! It seems these people delight in torturing these animals, and it goes way beyond just human consumption. We have to send a message that animal cruelty in any form will not be tolerated. Animals deserve just as humane an existences as we do, and if people must kill them for food, then at least don't let them suffer.
Maybe hunting should be outlawed. Basically the same as described above. Blood contaminating the ground water,unregulated slaughter and butchering etc... Meat should be illegal. It's so cruel to raise an animal or take an animal from the wild to feed humans!

Someone posted on Facebook that a livestock dealer they talked to informed them that the same people who buy goats for slaughter in the city (PA) also buy mini-horses. I can't imagine either being butchered in a city.
Thank you for making us aware of this horrific situation. Once again I am learning of man's inhumanity toward other living creatures. There seems to be no end to the cruel treatment of those without a voice to defend themselves. ALDF is vital in addressing this issue.

There is actually a kind of new trend on the west coast: butchery for relaxation and personal fulfillment. People pay a lot of money to learn to butcher animals. It is so sick. There have been some reports about it on NPR. I tried to search for them, but all I could find was a link to this story: http://www.npr.org/blogs/thesalt/2012/01/21/145521431/how-one-former-vegan-learned-to-embrace-butchering The above story is in a rural 'farm'-type setting. But the west coast stories were definitely about an urban phenomenon. But in all of the stories, NPR seems to be very willing to go right along and glorify this behavior as some sort of new form of 'self-expression.' Until 'farmed' animals are given the same protections as 'domestic' animals, this kind of psychopathic behavior will continue to enjoy the cover of the law. I'm so glad someone is presenting a legal challenge to this type of behavior.

For every action there is a reaction. According to the law of karma, if we cause pain and suffering to other living beings, we must endure pain and suffering in return, both individually and collectively. We reap what we sow, in this life and the next, for nature has her own justice. No one can escape the law of karma.

Backyard slaughter pens are not "farms." I believe that the term "factory farm" should also be changed to remove the word "farm" from the title. A farm is a place where a family or a family and a few employees work the land and raise animals. While treatment is not always as humane and we would like, a good farm follows humane husbandry practices and respects the life of the animals to be slaughtered for food. Backyard slaughter pens are one of the worse barbarities inflicted upon animals and, since the owners of these horrible places do not follow the laws already in place, should face long jail times for violation of animal welfare laws, endangerment of drinking water, and creation of hazardous conditions for human and animal health. I hope ALDF pushes forward to close down these stinking places of depravity.
I couldn't look. Even thinking about the written descriptions made my stomach lurch. I'd like to involve other people in helping to end this horror, but I cannot share what I cannot bare to look at myself. And children witness these tortures????

So i guess no one has heard of a CAFO and an industrial slaughterhouse, the same this happens there everyday and that is fully monitored by the USDA. This is nothing new.

The state of Florida has felony animal abuse laws in place right now , it's the goverment locally that choses not to prosecute these individuals criminally . So if enough of us complain they will have to take notice and start taking the correct actions to stop this abuse. Such an abomination. I thought there couldn't be anything worse than factory farms and slaughterhouses, but here it is. Where is the damn government? The Department of Agriculture? This is supposedly prohibited. Why isn't it being stopped? Those poor, innocent animals made to suffer such torture at the hands of so-called humans who know no compassion, ethics or morals. The reasons why this should not be tolerated are enormous. It should start with how inhumane it is & should fall under penalty to the laws that were put in place to prevent it. Ways to stop this are to raise awareness, demand laws that protect animals, immediate evaluation and punishments to those who commit such horrific acts and to never, ever, eat meat. As a Nurse and someone who has been a vegetarian for more than 20 years please know that You are much healthier as a vegetarian, for many reasons!! The medical studies prove this as well. Even my two dogs are vegetarians and eat eggs, cheese and peanut butter, tofo, along with healthy beans, fruits and vegetables and per our vet "are very healthy".

These vile human beings should be exterminated. The world is vastly overpopulated as it is, let's start culling psychopaths like these. That said, a legal slaughterhouse is not much of an improvement. Read "Slaughterhouse: The shocking story of greed, neglect and inhumane treatment inside the US meat industry". A true eye opener. And if you continue to choose to eat meat after reading it, you really would need to take a long, hard look at yourself and what kind of person you really are. I will never eat meat, dairy or eggs again.
These killer/criminals are mentally challenged and should be thrown in prison at the very least -- i feel so sorry for the neighbors but more important, think of the animals and the hell and torment they're going through -- the authorities, society, should immediately intervene and rescue these animals and transfer them to animal sanctuaries under the care and love of great and wonderful people. Then, take these human-killer-criminals and throw them in prison and ensure that they are never released -- they do not belong in (normal) society.

These so called people should get the electric chair for crimes against animals. Where is the USDA? Where are the authorities while this is going on? These acts on the animals are horrible beyond words... Besides the suffering of the animals, do they not realize that they are serving the human "recipients" of the animal's flesh massive quantities of stress hormones? Cortisol compromises the immune system of humans and allows for things like cancer and AIDS to take hold.
As sad as this is, Some of these practices are tried and true way to bleed an animal before cutting up the meat. The heart has to continue pumping to force out the blood. Obviously yall don't know what the pork supplier for WALMART does to their pigs before they slaughter them. They are kept in gestation cages only big enough for them to stand up or lay down, not even turn around. They literally go insane in these cages and chew on the steel bars out of psychotic fits and usually have sores and lesions on them caused from stress. And this is done for MONTHS AND MONTHS. They never know life beyond a concrete floor and steel bars. Their babies teeth and blunted with a pair of wire cutters and their little testicles and literally PULLED BY HAND, FROM INSIDE THEIR LITTLE BODY WITH NO PAIN KILLERS. What most of those guys are doing is nothing compared to the torture. The pigs go thru from the farm that supplies ALL WALMARTS. I have seen slaughter houses, it really isn't much different than what these guys are doing. They used to put the cows into a stall that would have a mechanism to lock their head in place and a Guy would go down the line with a machete cutting each ones throat, then they would be hung upsidedown to bleed.
I feel shocked, horrified, dismayed, and saddened to the core at what is going on in these videos. It is unfathomable. I find strength in the intelligent comments that you have all made here and I hope that our individual voices speaking about and drawing attention to these issues will help eliminate cruelty and make things better in the future.
I am in absolute disbelief at this torture and that adults believe this is sane and suitable for children. All adults who subject children to this horror should be charged with child abuse and the children removed from these families. Face shots of all individuals should be plastered everwhere for the community to know whose these murderers are. In fact, they need to be strung up like the innocent victims they violate I am ashamed of humans and their rampage against the natural environment in which we are to cohabitate and be benevolent stewards of the earth. While shocked at reading this I can only thank the ALDF and brave souls who have the stamina to photograph and witness this for the rest of us. For it is the truth we need to see as terrible as it is so we can stand up to what amounts to no less than abject evil. I will make a donation to this cause to help legal fees to stop abuse and destruction.

Is this the case of a few bad examples that spoil it for the rest? I have worked in an abattoir and had a butchery for some years before moving onto better and brighter things. I now only process for my own family and a few friends. The main reason is to keep us supplied in meat that is organic, properly fed and looked after -not from grain fed feed lot, pumped with antibiotics and chemicals like you get in the supermarkets. The killing is always done as humanly as possible, usually a well aimed bullet to the brain, but sometimes in the case of sheep I use a SHARP knife to cut the animals throat then nick the nerve at the back of the neck -the animal dies quickly within seconds. Every time without fail I give sincere thanks to the animal before and after killing. From my experience as a slaughterman and having to come to terms with the taking of life, I have come believe that people should not eat meat or use any of the products derived from animals -like leather belts and shoes for example - unless they at least witness a killing first hand and come to terms with it themselves. Every life on this earth is special, even an ant or bug and should be valued and treated with respect in the best manner possible. (except mosquitoes ;-) I don't believe that a series of new controlling laws banning this practice is the answer. I ironically came across another campaign entitled "Stop Corporate Control of our food supply" on this site...well this is exactly what you get when you make demands for the government to sort something out like this (where it is probably only a few bad examples in reality). This is naive and the very reason why we have these bureaucratic, legal-land tyrannical governments that exist now. Real change for the better comes from ground up not a top down authority. I think the simple answer to this particular issue is better education in the practice and actually learning to do it properly in a humane way. At a deeper level though, I think we all need to look at how better we can foster a greater understanding and love into our society on an individual basis as this has a flow on effect and grows with time. Maybe, just maybe we will then have better respect for one another and life itself.

I am so outraged I can hardly type. If I had watched the video, without info on where it was, I would have guessed a South American or 3rd world country. It's hard to believe it's happening in our own country! People are prosecuted for not giving their pets proper care. How can this happen without prosecution? Also, the way they are butchered, they can't be sanitary enough to eat. Something needs to happen IMMEDIATELY!

I was so sickened by this video that I had to run to the bathroom and throw-up. I cant stop crying. These people are the worst and they should be punished the same way as they have treated and visously hurt these animals and then they should be given the electric chair. There is no room for people like that on this earth.

Those of us who own farms and raise meat animals are appalled that you include us in your characterization of those who abuse animals. There are already abuse laws that cover the operations that you are describing. My animals run free on pasture, and get the highest quality feed and care. The REAL abusers are the factory farms. Here in northern Michigan is a huge cattle confinement operation that has ruined the countryside around it, polluted the groundwater, and leaves dead carcasses to rot out in the open. It is so bad that a recent issue of "O" magazine (Oprah's magazine} featured the horrific animal abuse and environmental pollution this place has created. Why are you not going after these operations. Or the huge feedlots where cattle are forced to be crowded into pens filled with knee-deep manure, for weeks on end?

Any person who lacks compassion for innocent, trusting, animals which feel pain exactly in the same way that we do, is a true sociopath! Hundreds of studies confirm this. Ways to stop this are to raise awareness, demand laws that protect animals, immediate evaluation and punishments to those who commit such horrific acts and to never, ever, eat meat. As a Nurse and someone who has been a vegetarian for more than 20 years please know that You are much healthier as a vegetarian, for many reasons!! The medical studies prove this as well. Even my two dogs are vegetarians and eat eggs, cheese and peanut butter, tofu, along with healthy beans, fruits and vegetables and per our vet "are very healthy". Know that anytime you eat meat the animal suffers greatly. Can you justify that?

The Humane Slaughtering Act exists because consumers demanded it. The USDA/FSIS barely enforces the law on the books as it is. I don't have much faith that the authorities will treat this with much seriousness either. A scathing memo is about all they dole out as "punishment" to the legit slaughterhouses, which are terrible enough. They just do enough to keep up appearances to justify their paycheck and work more to contain bad publicity for the meat industry. This will get turned into some b.s. cultural sensitivity political correct protectionism and the animals will keep on being tortured.

Sadly, the same atrocities occur at 'legitimate' slaughter houses, too. It seems there is a culture of callous disregard for suffering whether in factory farms or in back yards. Stricter and better supervised humane slaughter laws would be a step in the right direction, but unfortunately the commercial slaughter industry is putting forth 'Ag Gag' bills that would make it a crime to take undercover videos or photos or otherwise expose these horrific conditions. There is something horribly wrong with a people who can normalize sadism in this way.

I couldn't even watch the vid past seeing the living conditions..If one does this to a animal think how he treats his own kind. this is why i care for animals more than people... i know someone who owns a puppy mill Squaw creek kennels in Barnes ,city Ia although i do think mr van doorn cars for his some 500+ dogs and has other breeders who sell to him.. hes still in it for the $$$ he does hire people to clean and take proper care of the dogs i don't like how he destroys the dogs when they are no longer any good to him for breeding.. and the state of Iowa really doesn't care much if u ask me.. I just think the Iowa govt needs to end puppy mills for good in iowa.
