The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS)

The Regulatory Affairs section of the Federal Affairs department works to support the regulatory goals of The HSUS to ensure that all animals receive the legislative and regulatory protections they deserve. The intern will learn about animal protection regulations while assisting with research and data compilation on federal legislation and regulatory issues. The intern will be provided with opportunities to strengthen research and writing skills, gain valuable exposure to and foster a deeper understanding of numerous animal protection issues, federal legislative agendas, and the regulatory process, and will be able to develop a structured mentor/mentee relationship while practicing networking and leadership skills.

The intern will also complete a non-credit online Humane Society University course related to the internship.

Responsibilities and projects include:

• Assist with legal and non-legal research as well as writing projects on federal regulations
• Research and draft one- to two-page briefing documents which highlight the important aspects of HSUS issues
• May have an opportunity to attend legislative or federal agency meetings and hearings

Strong intern applicants have a passion for making a difference in the lives of animals and meet the following requirements:

• Must be a second- or third-year law student with superior legal research and writing skills
• Must be well knowledgeable of and thoroughly experienced with online legal research tools such as Lexis and Westlaw research systems and be proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel)
• Have strong communication skills and demonstration of a particular interest in animal protection issues
• Preferably have a background in administrative law, environmental law, or animal law

The minimum time commitment is 10 hours per week for approximately 12 weeks; however, a part-time schedule will be considered on a case-by-case basis. This internship is unpaid, but course credit can be arranged.

Intern must pass a criminal background check and sign a waiver and release of liability. Work is located in our Washington, D.C., office.
