Executive Director

Serves as the organization's Chief Executive and reports directly to the Board of Directors and is ultimately responsible for leading the organization's success.

S/he is responsible for the following:

(1) Provides leadership and strategic direction for CSNW
(2) Management of all fiscal resources and operational considerations
(3) Management of Board of Directors/Executive Director relationship

S/he is responsible for overseeing and ensuring the quality of the following:

(4) Supervision of all staff
(5) Leads ongoing advocacy, community outreach, and educational programs
(6) Provision of chimpanzee care

The Location

The Executive Director must be based either in Cle Elum or the greater Seattle area. If based in Seattle, the Executive Director will be expected to maintain daily contact with sanctuary staff and make frequent (averaging once per week) trips to the sanctuary.

The Responsibilities

Leadership:

  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors, refine and implement CSNW's vision, mission, budget, annual goals and objectives
  • Develop the internal structure and budget to support current programs and future growth
  • Articulate and promote the shared vision and strategic plan for CSNW
  • Develop and cultivate strategic partnerships and establish networks in the animal welfare community to support program opportunities and collaborations
  • Work closely with the Board President to develop and facilitate the activities of the CSNW Board and collaborate with board leadership on shared objectives
  • Serves as the primary organization planner, setting goals and objectives and developing projections of needs and funding within guidelines set by the Board

Strategic Planning:

  • Assure continued financial stability, consistent with program goals, by broadening CSNW's base of individual supporters and contributors as well as foundation support
  • Increase CSNW's visibility as an exceptional provider of care for abused and exploited chimpanzees
  • Maintain and develop an effective governance structure that reflects the diversity of its constituencies, operates transparently, and provides formal communication channels with its stakeholders
  • Ensure adherence to CSNW's strategic plan – including updating as needed

Operations & Administration:

  • Ensure a strong administrative infrastructure (human resources, finance, database, technology, etc.) that supports CSNW's growth
  • Manage the day-to-day operations and staff of CSNW, allocate resources, and inspire staff/volunteer activities
  • Oversee CSNW facilities, capital budgets and planning
  • Maintain official records and documents; ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations

Financial Management:

  • Responsible for planning and administering CSNW's annual budget. This includes preparing and monitoring annual budget, program budgets, capital expenditures, investments, managing cash flow and financial management systems
  • Oversee A/R, A/P, payroll, taxes, banking transactions, and tax preparation
  • Ensure proper fiscal policies and procedures and risk management guidelines
  • Ensure the growth of cash reserves
  • Supervise audits, preparation of expenditure reports, and all other fiscal reports
  • Develop and maintain records and reports on organizational goals, milestones and accomplishments.

Fund Development:

  • Assure a long-range, sustainable, diverse funding plan that ensures CSNW's strategic goals are achieved
  • Manage, diversify, and grow CSNW's resource base
  • Oversee all fundraising activities led by the Director of Development including grants, annual giving, corporate sponsorships, special events, donor cultivation, major gifts campaigns, and other organization-related solicitations (including e-campaigns)
  • Collaborate with Development and Marketing Committee to engage board members in fundraising
  • Seek new revenue sources to meet program goals, including public funding

Board Administration:

  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop an engaged, effective, and energized board and ensure smooth and efficient functioning
  • Keep the board fully informed on the financial, political, programmatic, and strategic progress milestones as a regular participant in Board meetings
  • Collaborate with the Board of Directors in the development and maintenance of a current, multi-year strategic plan
  • Support and inform the Board with adequate information to help members reach sound decisions and establish policies
  • Assist in the recruitment, orientation, and training of new board members
  • Participate as ex-officio member of all committees (Executive, Finance/Human Resources, Development and Marketing, Direct Care, Board Development, Strategic Planning/Retreat/Dashboard)

Human Resources:

  • Lead recruitment, employment, and termination of all personnel and maintain a climate that attracts, motivates and retains a roster of first-class, diverse staff and volunteers
  • Ensure that adequate job descriptions, annual work plans, and compensation plans are in place, that regular performance evaluations are held, and that sound human resource practices and policies are in place
  • Encourage staff and volunteer development and education
  • Nurture a team identity and environment
  • Hire and manage independent contractors as needed to ensure operational effectiveness

Public Relations & Communications:

  • Further CSNW's goals and increase awareness and visibility of the mission
  • Serve as a key spokesperson, manage communications, media and outreach strategy to enhance visibility in the press
  • Represent CSNW, its programs and successes at community and professional events
  • Oversee marketing and communications plans for CSNW
  • Build CSNW presence and visibility by promoting organizational accomplishments
  • Promote and facilitate communication among CSNW and community groups through use of website, list-serves, newsletters and other means

Public Policy & Advocacy:

  • Develop and promote a public policy and advocacy agenda designed to advance CSNW's organizational vision and mission and protect captive chimpanzees
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and advancement of CSNW's advocacy programming
  • Conduct legislative analysis, research and prepare policy briefs, fact sheets, public education campaign materials and all other policy related information for the public and the board of directors
  • Build positive relationships with partner organizations, policymakers, media and others
    Direct Care
  • Understands the direct chimpanzee care responsibilities and as feasible provides care on a schedule that is realistic given the multiple responsibilities of this position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience and passion for animal welfare, rescue or sanctuary programs
  • Minimum of five years of non profit executive leadership work experience with evidence of increasing responsibility and success
  • Experience managing and/or directing staff and volunteers
  • Proven experience and ability in fundraising, nonprofit fiscal management, and budget preparation for an organizational budget of $500K+
  • Experience with strategic planning and translating that to operational planning
  • Well developed interpersonal and group skills, collaborative nature, excellent communication skills
  • Experience working with and developing a geographically dispersed board of directors

Compensation
Competitive salary, commensurate with experience and benefit plan. CSNW will discuss relocation costs with appropriate candidates.
